| Cancun, a growing city and wolrd renown tourist destination, is located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo. Cancun is divided into two distinct areas: the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) on the "7" shaped Cancun island and el Centro (Downtown) on the mainland. |

| bridge at the southern tip and by the Playa Linda bridge at the northern tip.The island, a long, narrow, 22 kilometer strip of sandy beach, is bisected by a long main road named Kukulkan Boulevard. An enormous lagoon named Laguna Nichupte is formed by the insed of the "7" to the island' s south- west. To the north and south it opens to the Caribbean Sea. |

| Downtown cancun |

| The heart of the city of Cancun is its centro (downtown). Thousands of tourists flock to this area to haggle with vendors in the giant mercados (markets) set up along Tulum Ave., or to enjoy the exquisite plates and exotic drinks offered by downtown restaurants and bars. At night this area comes alive with mariachis and tourists out to explore the town. |

| Getting around |

| Buses, taxis, rented cars, mopeds and bicycles are plentiful throughout the avenues and boulevards. Bus stops are sprinkled throughout downtown and the Hotel Zone. While economical, buses can be packed during peak hours. The normal price is less than a dollar U.S. Taxi fares are fixed in the Hotel Zone, so ask the driver for the fare before you jump in. |
